Equipment
Film production roles, equipment, workflows, and terms.
Changing bag
A light-tight fabric enclosure that lets film or photosensitive material be handled without a darkroom.
Changing tent
A framed light-tight enclosure offering more working volume than a changing bag for loading or repairs.
Charlie bar
A long narrow opaque strip or small rectangular flag, commonly fitted with a pin, used to cast a controlled shadow or break up a beam.
Checksum drive
A designated storage device used in a verified camera-media copy and backup workflow.
Cheeseborough clamp
A scaffold-style coupler used to join compatible pipes at fixed or swiveling angles.
Cherry picker
Informal name for a mobile elevating work platform with a boom and personnel basket used to reach elevated work positions.
Chicago position
The commonly used name for placing a full apple on its long narrow side, roughly 12 inches high; some crews use other regional names.
Chicken coop light
A broad overhead soft-light box traditionally built with multiple lamps—often six—arranged to wash a set from above.
China ball
A paper lantern used as a lightweight omnidirectional soft source when safely rigged.
Combo stand
A heavy-duty stand with interchangeable junior and baby receivers for lighting and grip equipment.
Condenser microphone
A microphone whose diaphragm and charged backplate form a sound-sensitive capacitor that converts acoustic vibration into an electrical signal.
Condenser microphone backplate
The rigid conductive plate positioned close to a condenser microphone diaphragm to form a variable capacitor.
Condor
Film-set slang for a telescopic or articulating boom lift used to elevate lighting, diffusion, rigging access, or personnel.
Contact microphone
A transducer that captures vibration through direct contact with an object or surface.
Contrast viewing glass
A dark monocular viewing filter used to evaluate relative lighting contrast and source direction without continuously viewing the full scene brightness.
Core load
Motion-picture film wound on a hub without the protective flanges of a daylight spool.
Crab dolly
A steerable camera dolly capable of moving laterally or diagonally as well as forward and backward without relying solely on straight track.
Crank stand
A stand using a geared handle or winch to elevate heavy lighting, frame, or speaker loads.
CTB gel
Color-temperature-blue correction media used to cool the visible output of a light source.
CTO gel
Color-temperature-orange correction media used to warm the visible output of a light source.
Cucoloris
An irregular patterned screen placed in a light path to cast broken shadows and create texture on a subject or background.
Cutter
A large flag used to remove a controlled portion of light from a set or lens.
Cyclorama
A large seamless curved background that removes the visible floor-to-wall corner and creates an apparently continuous field.
Daylight load
Film supplied on a spool designed for loading in subdued light under the stock maker’s instructions.
Daylight spool
A flanged film spool designed to limit edge exposure during subdued-light loading and unloading of compatible formats.
Diffusion
A translucent material that scatters light, reducing contrast and softening the apparent source.
Dimmer
A controller that varies fixture power or output within the fixture and electrical system’s rated limits.
Diopter
A close-focus optical attachment that reduces the minimum focusing distance of a lens.
Directional RF antenna
An antenna designed to favor radio-frequency reception or transmission in selected directions.
Director’s monitor
A production display provided for creative review of framing, performance, continuity, and takes.
Distro box
A portable power-distribution unit that divides a feeder into protected branch circuits.
Dovetail plate
A tapered sliding plate that lets a camera assembly mount, balance, and release from compatible support.
Duckbill clamp
A wide, flat-jawed clamp used to hold foam board, beadboard, or similar sheet material.
Dutch head
A camera support head providing controlled roll-axis movement for canted framing.
Duvetyne
A light-absorbing fabric used for flags, masking, and negative fill.
Dynamic microphone
A microphone using electromagnetic induction, commonly valued for robustness and high-level handling.
Edge number
Human- or machine-readable identification printed along film edges to locate stock and footage.
EF lens mount
Canon’s electronic bayonet lens interface, used on still and some cinema camera systems.
Eggcrate grid
A fabric or rigid cellular modifier that limits the spread of a soft source.
Eighth apple
A thin apple-box riser, commonly about 1 inch high, used to make a small controlled height correction.
Electret condenser microphone
A condenser microphone whose capsule uses permanently charged electret material rather than requiring external polarization voltage.
Electrical tape
A flexible insulating tape intended for electrical conductors and connections; it is not a substitute for gaffer tape.
Electronic viewfinder
A camera-mounted electronic display used by the operator for framing, focus, exposure, and status.
Elephant blocks
A three-legged modular riser system designed to provide stable incremental height changes in a smaller package than traditional apples.
Ellipsoidal reflector spotlight
A hard-beam fixture with shutters and an accessory plane for precise theatrical control.
Extension tube
A non-optical spacer that increases lens-to-sensor distance for closer focusing.
False color
A monitoring overlay that assigns colors to measured exposure ranges for rapid image evaluation.
Feed spool
The reel supplying unexposed or source film into a camera or transport.
Field mixer
A portable audio console used to combine, route, monitor, and control production-sound inputs.
Figure-eight microphone
A bidirectional microphone pattern sensitive at front and rear with strong side nulls.
Film can
A protective container used to store and transport wound motion-picture film.
Film cleaner
A machine, fluid, or approved process used to remove dust, oils, and debris from motion-picture film.
Film core
A flangeless hub around which professional motion-picture film is wound for storage or handling.
Film emulsion
The light-sensitive coating on photographic film containing image-forming materials in gelatin layers.
