An Avid intraframe codec family designed for HD editorial and post-production workflows.
DNxHR
An Avid resolution-independent intraframe codec family for HD, UHD, and larger rasters.
Dolly Grip
A Dolly Grip builds and operates camera-dolly systems to create smooth, repeatable movement. They lay and level track, place and secure the camera platform, rehearse timing with the Camera Operator and performers, push or ride the dolly, and help execute cranes, sliders, and other moving camera supports safely.
Dolly in
A camera move physically traveling closer to the subject along the viewing axis.
Dolly out
A camera move physically traveling away from the subject along the viewing axis.
Door split
A settlement arrangement allocating defined ticket revenue between parties by an agreed percentage or formula.
Doors
The advertised or operational time when audience admission begins for a live event.
Doorway dolly shot
A camera move made with a compact platform dolly that can pass through standard doorways.
Double-purchase counterweight system
A counterweight arrangement using mechanical advantage so the arbor travels about half the batten distance.
Doubles breakdown
A planning record identifying photo, body, stunt, stand-in, hand, or other double requirements.
Dovetail plate
A tapered sliding plate that lets a camera assembly mount, balance, and release from compatible support.
Downstage
The area or direction closer to the audience on a conventional stage.
Downstream keyer
A keyer placed late in a switcher signal path for logos, titles, or overlays.
DPX sequence
An ordered set of Digital Picture Exchange files, typically one image file per frame.
Dress rehearsal
A planned full run using performance conditions, costumes, technical cues, and show sequence as completely as practical.
Dressing room
A private backstage space where performers change, prepare, store personal items, and receive calls.
Driving plan
A production safety plan covering authorized drivers, vehicles, routes, schedules, loads, communications, and foreseeable road hazards.
Drone Operator
A film Drone Operator plans and flies an unmanned aircraft camera system for aerial or elevated shots. They coordinate airspace, certification, permissions, weather, location safety, aircraft performance, camera movement, visual observers, and emergency procedures while serving the Director and Cinematographer’s shot plan.
Drone safety
Operational controls for unmanned aircraft used in filming, surveying, lighting, or event production.
Drop-frame timecode
A numbering convention that skips selected labels to align 29.97-frame video timecode with clock time.
Dropped-object prevention
Planning and controls that keep tools, hardware, and equipment from falling from elevated work or suspension.
Dual-system sound
Picture and production sound recorded on separate devices for later synchronization.
Dubbing Actor
A Dubbing Actor performs a translated or adapted voice track that replaces an original-language performance while preserving character, intention, emotional progression, timing, and visible mouth movement as closely as the production requires. They rehearse cues, follow the Dubbing Director, manage vocal consistency, fit words into available screen time, perform efforts and reactions, and complete pickups across episodes or versions.
Dubbing Director
A Dubbing Director guides performers and the recording team through a localized replacement dialogue track, protecting character, story, tone, pronunciation, cultural meaning, timing, and continuity with the original picture. They review adaptations, cast or approve voices where assigned, lead recording sessions, choose takes, resolve lines that do not fit, track pickups, and coordinate with localization, editorial, and mixing teams.
Duckbill clamp
A wide, flat-jawed clamp used to hold foam board, beadboard, or similar sheet material.
Dummy round
An inert cartridge-shaped prop intended to appear loaded while containing no primer or propellant.
Dutch angle
A composition with the camera roll axis intentionally tilted from level.
Dutch head
A camera support head providing controlled roll-axis movement for canted framing.
Duvetyne
A light-absorbing fabric used for flags, masking, and negative fill.
Dynamic load
A force that changes due to acceleration, impact, movement, vibration, or sudden stopping.
Dynamic microphone
A microphone using electromagnetic induction, commonly valued for robustness and high-level handling.
Edge blending
The overlap and luminance shaping of adjacent projected images into a wider continuous canvas.
Edge light
A source creating a narrow highlight along a subject’s outline.
Edge number
Human- or machine-readable identification printed along film edges to locate stock and footage.
Edit bin
A logical container used to organize clips, sequences, audio, graphics, and other project items in an editing system.
Edit point
The boundary where one clip or segment begins or ends in an edited sequence.
Edit project file
The application document containing editorial organization, sequences, effects, metadata, and media references.
Editor
A Film Editor selects and arranges picture and sound to build the finished story. Working closely with the Director, the Editor shapes performance, structure, pace, point of view, transitions, and emotional rhythm while coordinating versions, feedback, turnovers, and the path from dailies to locked picture.
EDL
An edit decision list that records ordered source events and timecode for transferring an edit between systems.
EF lens mount
Canon’s electronic bayonet lens interface, used on still and some cinema camera systems.
Effects pass
A separate recorded pass isolating a practical, atmospheric, lighting, or visual-effects element.
Eggcrate grid
A fabric or rigid cellular modifier that limits the spread of a soft source.
Eighth apple
A thin apple-box riser, commonly about 1 inch high, used to make a small controlled height correction.
Electret condenser microphone
A condenser microphone whose capsule uses permanently charged electret material rather than requiring external polarization voltage.
Electric arc
A sustained electrical discharge through a gas such as air.
Electric circuit
A complete conductive path through which electric current can flow.
Electric current
The movement of electric charge through a conductor, measured in amperes.
Electric power
The rate at which electrical energy is transferred or consumed, measured in watts.
Electrical bonding
The intentional connection of conductive parts to establish reliable electrical continuity.
Electrical burn
Tissue injury caused by current through the body, an arc, or overheated electrical equipment.
