Microphone diaphragm

A thin membrane in a microphone element that moves in response to changes in sound pressure.

Also known as: mic diaphragm

Reviewed

A thin membrane in a microphone element that moves in response to changes in sound pressure.

Use cases

  • Its motion is converted differently by each operating principle: a condenser varies capacitance, a moving-coil dynamic moves a coil in a magnetic field, and a ribbon places the conductive ribbon itself in that field. Diaphragm size alone does not determine the complete sound or suitability of a microphone.

Setup

  • Confirm the intended use, inspect the equipment, and coordinate placement with the responsible department.

Safety notes

  • Use only within manufacturer ratings and the production safety plan.

In practice

Its motion is converted differently by each operating principle: a condenser varies capacitance, a moving-coil dynamic moves a coil in a magnetic field, and a ribbon places the conductive ribbon itself in that field.
